Step 1The Tiny Dancers sizing tool printed and placed against a wall.

Paper against a wall

Print the size guide and confirm it has printed to scale using the accuracy checker on the page. Place it on a hard floor with the edge flat against the wall. Avoid carpet — it compresses under weight.

Step 2A child's foot in a pink sock on the sizing tool, with a hand marking the longest toe position.

Stand, mark the longest toe

Child stands on the paper, heel against the wall, weight on both feet. They should be wearing socks they will normally use in the shoes. Mark the tip of the longest toe — it’s not always the big toe. Mark both feet.

Step 3Hands measuring the distance between heel and toe mark with a tape measure.

Find your size

Add a small growth margin above the mark on the longest foot. The right size will show clearly in the red lines.

Good to know

A few things about children's feet.

Mostly cartilage, not bone.

Children's feet are mostly cartilage at birth. Bones form gradually and the structure isn't fully developed until the late teenage years.

Up to two sizes a year.

Between ages 1 and 3, feet grow roughly 1.5mm per month. By age three, most children have gone through nine shoe sizes.

Growth happens unevenly.

80% of foot growth takes place between the heel and the ball of the foot. The foot doesn't just get longer. The proportions change.

Half their adult size by age one.

The first year is the fastest growth phase. After that, growth slows but continues well into adolescence.

Shape changes before size does.

In the early years, the foot is fuller and rounder. As children grow, it becomes narrower and more defined, even between sizes that are close in length.

Shoes are outgrown rather than worn out.

Measuring every 8 to 12 weeks catches the right moment to move up, before the fit starts to feel off.
